The nuns did not say that the story of Christ was patterned after Mithra--or Osiris, BTW--but the timing to coincide with Saturnalia, you bet! Before I turned seven, I knew about Saturnalia and the decision to place the timing from the nuns. In high school, an admittedly private school but still religious, there was lively discussion of the roots of all of the traditions and none of us thought it strange that we should be doing so. The Golden Bough was required reading.
