RE <Ted, <how exactly is AMD supposed to pick up the slack when two of the major OEMs (Dell and GTW) are exclusively contracted with intc? Oh yeah, like AMD is really going to have trouble finding customers for their 850K Athlons this quarter. Or 1.2M. Or whatever. >> First and foremost, your original post said that there is a shortage of chips and AMD can't pick up the slack...that implies a criticism of AMD's production capabilities and in turn, its performance. Secondly you say there is a shortage of chips....is there really a shortage of chips in general or rather a shortage of intc-specific chips that are needed by dell and gtw? I believe its the latter and that is why I pointed out the exclusiveness of the contracts intc has with dell and gtw. It would appear that it did not matter how many chips AMD produced, for dell and gtw there still would be a shortage. Finally I would assume that if AMD was functioning well, they would anticipate demand at the beginning of the quarter and schedule production accordingly. At that time they did not know that intc will not meet its production goals for the quarter. When they did find out, I would suspect that chip production (much like other production processes) is difficult to modify on short notice. So there was not much AMD could do even if dell and gtw were willing to break their contract with intc. Your post would seem to ignore all of the above and come to some fast and questionable conclusions. RE < in spite of this obviously very poor performance on the part of intc, you have the chutzpah to come over here and criticize AMD's performance. Unbelievable! No, I'm not criticizing AMD's performance, OK? In fact, I think AMD has performed rather admirably. I didn't expect AMD to manufacture more than 850K Athlons this quarter, but obviously they're exceeding my expectations, not to mention my expectations of their speed ramping. I'm just looking at their successes in the right perspective, unlike you guys who tend to exaggerate AMD's current successes and Intel's short-term stumbles. >> I think that most people on this thread have things in pretty good perspective. The truth is AMD is doing very well for AMD(of course for INTC, it would be disappointing). Since this is a first for AMD in some time, the response is very, very positive on this thread and you, I believe, are not used to that.....hence it may seem over done to you. As for your denial of any criticism of AMD's performance, I take them as I see them...it sure sounded like a criticism to me at the time. RE < You know what? I think it's unbelievable that no matter what, you always see me as criticizing AMD. I give credit where credit it due. It's time you did the same. >> I might suggest, then, that you read your comments carefully before posting....clearly there was a strong reaction by this thread to this one. At times it sounds like your posts originate in a place of superiority....whether that place of superiority is appropriate or not, I hope you can understand that it can be very abrasive to the ears of this thread. As for credit where credit is due, I never have a problem with acknowledging INTC's successes....however I fear that you have trouble acknowledging that lately, those successes are far and few between. ted
