(a) or (b) is the most likely, IMO. I think (c) can be discarded.
If (a), then the likelihood of a secret meeting is more plausible. A secret meeting does not have to have romantic connotations. The reasons are numerous, but having something to do with her thesis is most likely.
If (b), it could still be something academic.

Has anyone thought of blackmail?
