TNT Post Groep In Talks For Compaq Logistics Contract

AMSTERDAM -- Dutch postal company TNT Post Groep NV (TP) said Wednesday it is in talks with Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) of the U.S. to handle Compaq Spare Parts' logistics needs in Europe, the Middle East and Africa - a deal worth an estimated NLG500 million annually, TPG said.

The company said it expects to sign a definitive contract in early 2000.

"TPG will take care of the entire supply chain, transport and storage," the company said in a release.

TPG said it will reduce the current number of Compaq's local distribution centers in the region to 90 from 140 and build a new 20,000 square meter distribution center in the east of the Netherlands, creating 125 jobs.

By 0934 GMT TPG shares had risen 2.4% or 65 cents on the news, to EUR27.54. The benchmark Dutch AEX index, meanwhile, was 1% higher.
