Sales of top 10 ICs will be up a roaring 38% this year
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ.--Too bad the entire semiconductor business isn't growing as fast as the top 10 selling product families.
These 10 product segments will grow 38% this year, soaring from $37.5 billion in 1998 to $51.7 billion this year, according to the latest numbers from IC Insights, Inc.
Fastest growing products are 32-bit microcontrollers (up 88% over 1998), flash memory (68%), DRAMs (40%), and MOS PLDs (39%). Rounding out the top 10 are: analog interface circuits (36%), standard cell ASICs (34%), ECL logic (33%), special purpose MOS logic (32%), 16-bit microcontrollers (29%), and DSPs (25%). snip...

At least IDT has some exposure in the Fastest growth area. Top of the list, even though it is the only one.

Jim,

Good to see the emphasis on comms products. IDTI's process technology has never been leading-edge, but the deficiencies were never so apparent as with the x86 processors. I think that they will be able to make the line size transitions OK as long as they stay away from complex CPUs.

I agree with you on the lack of "killer" products or category owners. That is my source of worry. We can continue to look for the rising tide to lift all boats. On the other hand, IDTI is the best-performing stock in my portfolio over the last 52 weeks, and that includes internets. I suppose I will hold for a while longer!
