Finally got @home today! Only a two year wait. The install was a snap. The guy was beside himself that I made it so easy for him. (new Piii computer with an ethernet card already setup and I knew exactly how to fish the cable through the wall) He was in and out in about an hour and that was with us talking non-stop, mostly him telling me all his install nightmare stories (which had everything to do with people's computers being screwed up before he got there).

Using the service here for a few hours the very first thing I noticed was that if you don't use their proprietary browser and just go to IE or Netscape it's a lot faster. Especially when accessing sites that are off their network (and just about everywhere I want to go is off their network). I never have been one for proxy servers....they slow you down. This has been the case with every Internet provider I've ever had. Even sluggish AOL flies on a direct Lan connection.

My online broker Datek updates so fast its blowing my mind....even Etrade flies. I'm happy (at least about the service, don't want to talk about the stock price).

I think that once we have a lot of computers in the retail channel with ethernet already installed (CompUSA was half with and half without) people are going to be able to configure their own connection. There was nothing difficult or complicated that I could see about any of this. Although he did have to do something at the hookup out side, most of what the guy did was run the cable inside and install software, set the network settings (all of which are on the work order). Everything but the outside hookup could be done by anyone even somewhat computer savvy.

I think I'm going to stop worrying about my investment.
