they see that company in the rear-view mirror in the not-so-distant future.

I am sure Cisco can see Nortel in the rear view mirror right now and Nortel is gaining on them. In October, 1998, 1 share of NT = .6 share of Cisco. Now, 1 share of NT = .95 share of Cisco. In the not-so-distant future...

Roth: As careful as Roth is not to slight any group within his own company, he will readily take out after the competition. In response to some of Cisco's recent acquisitions, Roth says: "Cisco is trying to diversify its portfolio and get into other fields. I'm not too sure that Cisco knows what it's getting itself into." No mincing words there.

In one fell swoop, Roth tackled Cisco and Lucent: "Well, Cisco's and Lucent's products in those areas [for carrier networks] are basically Stratacom and Ascend, and those are both enterprise-class products. They were never meant to be put in a network of that size," he says.

NOW, HERE IS A DOWN-TO-EARTH CEO WITH ENGINEERING PEDIGREE THAT NEITHER MCGUINN & CHAMBERS POSSESS.

YOU CAN'T WIN WITH MARKETING PROWESS IN THE CARRIER INFRASTRUCTURE BUSINESS (THE CUSTOMERS - PTT'S) ARE TOO KNOWLEDGEABLE AS A PURCHASER.

CSCO & LUCENT HAS HAD SOME MAJOR PRODUCT FAILURES CAUSING MAJOR PROBLEMS IN THE NETWORK. CARRIERS HAVE LONG MEMORY AND DO NOT FORGET THAT EASILY. AFTER ALL, WHEN NETWORKS GO DOWN, JOBS ON THE LINE.

THIS IS WHY NT WILL COME OUT AHEAD OF CSCO AND LUCENT (ACTUALLY CSCO IS NOT EVEN THERE IN THE PUBLIC NETWORK MARKET -- IT'S ONLY IN CHAMBERS DREAMS AND THEIR PR THAT CSCO IS A PLAYER IN THE PTT MARKET).

WHY DENY REALITY? SELL CISCO AND BUY NT OR KEEP CISCO BUT BUY NT AS THERE IS STILL A LONG RUN-UP LEFT!

That paints a pretty bleak picture of Roth. If that is a true picture, then Nortel is doomed to become the 3Com or Newbridge of the telecom space.
