Goutama,

Couple of articles:

cnn.com

CNN reviews Piii 750 v. Athlon

We don't know who is going to win the race to a gigahertz, but the current crop of chips powers systems that will satisfy the most demanding users. Does it really matter if it's Intel or AMD inside at this point? Thanks to competition, you'll get top performance at a price you can afford.

-------------

It was only a matter of time.........the Athlon will only get more popular among the gamerz....500mhz overclocked to 800mhz!!!!

One Hot Athlon Overclocking Card
From Outside Loop Computers

As the old saying goes, "where there is a will, there is a way". When AMD's Athlon first hit the market many were disappointed with the lack of user configuration options for the first round of Athlon Motherboards. Still today, there aren't many boards out there that can do much in the way of overclocking the Athlon.

That didn't stop the good folks at Outside Loop from inventing a truly convenient way to overclock your Athlon processor in just about any motherboard imaginable. With the twist of a simple rotary switch the Afterburner Overclocking card from Outside Loop will turn your meager standard speed Athlon into an Overclocked Hot Rod CPU. Let's have a look...

Goutama - <The article is about Intel's accelerated roadmap, but it can also be appropriately titled as "AMD Athlon effect" OR "AMD has Intel sweating.">

Or, alternatively, the article could be titled "Coppermine to hit 1GHz despite industry saying it couldn't be done"..

The arrival of the 1-GHz Pentium III is also interesting, Brookwood said. "There was general concern that the current Coppermine core would max out at 933 MHz," he said. Coppermine is the newest Pentium III design, introduced in October.

If sweat is involved in a healthy competitive effort, so be it.

Have a good holiday season,
PB

<"They are really concerned about AMD," said Linley Gwennap, publisher of the Microprocessor Report. "AMD has Intel sweating.">

Kind of nice to see mainstream analyst community saying what this thread has been saying for a while. Gwennap's voice gets heard better than most others as far as CPU business is concerned - so the story should spread among institutions.

<The Intel chip road map also shows a growing gap between the higher-end Pentium III chips and their lower-end Celeron brethren.>

This is one of the few things that is going in K6's favor given the rumors about problems ramping up speed-grades on 180nm.

<Now, the company is announcing chips when only limited supplies are available, which allows Intel to release the chips at a faster rate.>

Even that seems to be behind what AMD can do!

<An Intel spokesman said that this pattern should continue in the future, especially as more PC companies move to the build-to-order manufacturing method.>

Trust Intel to name every reason in the book - "internet time", "built-to-order manufacturing" - to justify the reason for vaporware. Too risky to say competitive pressure, I guess....

Goutama, Now the worm turns and savages it's nemesis.
Intel is rushed into error after error. False CPU releases for parts that exist in their mind's eye, but not on any shelf.
How Dell with love this new model of internet ware.
"neverware" or as the Raven says "nevermoreware".
The spin meisters fall to the ground, still spinning, they dig holes.
