Conventionally, last day to sell is Tuesday, 12/28/ for transaction to settle 12/31. There may be exceptions for cash/certificate exchanges.

My impression is that all trades throught the 31st of December create taxable gains this year.

I think they changed the tax laws per the above. Better check
