Ericsson not interested in Qualcomm's phone sale

STOCKHOLM, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Sweden's Ericsson , the world's third biggest maker of mobile phones, said on
Wednesday it was not interested in buying the mobile phone devision of U.S. cellphone technology developer Qualcomm
(NasdaqNM:QCOM - news).

Qualcomm said earlier it would make an announcement at a news conference at 1630 EST (2130 GMT) regarding the
sale of its phone business.

``We're not involved in this,' Ericsson spokeswoman Pia Gideon told Reuters. ``We chose not to buy that unit when we purchased Qualcomm's
infrastructure business last spring.'

Ericsson has been rumoured in the past as wanting to buy Qualcomm's cellphone unit because the U.S. company has a well-developed code division
access (CDMA) technology, which is being deployed in new mobile networks.

Ericsson settled a patent dispute with Qualcomm earlier this year over wireless technology and bought some of its wireless infrastructure business.
Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson shares were 12 crowns higher at 508 crowns in a positive market.

Uncle Frank:

QCOM is under pressure this morning because Wall Street never likes uncertainty. The question of who the buyer lingers until 4:30 pm. We know it is not Erickson. So, Nokia/Motorola or some Korean like Samsung, etc. I have faith in QCOM management. Would anyone think that after the runup, management will let it burst by the seam by selling to a second tier. QCOM needs to keep its share price high to use as currency to make acquisition.

Right now, we just need to relax and wait for the 4:30PM show.

Best regards

Paul
