As you may know Kerala is the laggard among the southern states when it comes to Industry and business, the reason as you aptly point out is the Commies.

I don't know why Microsoft is not coming out with a Malayalam edition of Word or Windows right now (may be they will later if there is demand for it), perhaps they see more demand of their vernacular version in other languages such as Hindi.

Yes, there is an IT initiative in Kerala and there is a Software Technology Park in Trivandrum which is registering good growth. The first big billboard u see when u drive out of Bangalore airport is an invitation for IT businesses to set up shop in Trivandrum.

Still it is nowhere near as big as in Bangalore, Hyderabad or Chennai. Maybe that is the reason.

Also, I have this nagging feeling that maybe there wasn't any native Malayalam speaker at the unicode draft sessions and unicode doesn't really support Malayalam fully. (I am talking, in particular, bout chillaksharangal).
