REDWOOD CITY, Calif. ? Phone.com Inc., the pioneer of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), has made a stock offering worth approximately $285 million to acquire @Motion Inc. (Redwood Shores, Calif.), a developer of voice portal technology. Phone.com plans to integrate @Motion's Internet Voice Portal technology into the MyPhone personal portal and the Up.Link Server suite WAP 1.1 platform.

The goal of Phone.com (formerly known as Unwired Planet Inc.) is to create a unified phone/PDA platform capable of handling WAP, short message service, and enhanced circuit voice capabilities such as unified messaging and voice recognition. The resultant integrated product will compete in part with products from vendors such as General Magic Inc. and Wildfire Inc. Phone.com picks up 40 employees with its acquisition of @Motion, 30 of whom are engineers.
