I think we are seeing the greater fool theory in operation.
One way the economy of the current boom differs from say the industrial revolution is that the second tier players are virtually cut out of the market. When Ford made cars, it didn't stop other car manufacturers from making cars and eventually adopting Ford's methods. The complexity and the fact that the source for electronic and computing equipment means that it is very difficult for someone to buy a competitors product and actually figure out how it works. This means the winners win big and the losers disappear.
