I certainly do agree with you that perhaps we do not have enough information on hand to see the "big picture" like they do. (Da Fed) There sure could be something that Alan Greenspan sees out there bearing down on us... (and he ain't telling!)
While I give that a decent probability of being the case, in my view, they just dropped the proverbial "ball", and now it is too late to spook the markets, so they let it run with a very loose "leash", hoping that perhaps it (the market) will flatten out or only decline slowly... (good luck with that wish Mr Greenspan)
And I do take your posts seriously, but it could be my posting style or way of "talking" that throws you off! <g>

Don't have any country wide figures, but among my customers which number in the thousands, more than half have taken $1000 to $20000 out of the bank in recent weeks and hidden it in the house, citing Y2K concerns. Most who haven't, say they will be doing so in the near future. The effect, I presume, is to take a lot of money out of the system temporarily, lowering liquidity. Perhaps the Fed is just trying to counter this problem, and stay ahead of it in the next few weeks.

Most "experts" predict that people will not return this money to the banks, but will spend it quickly in the New Year. If this millennium consumption proves out, I bet a lot of computers and electronic stuff gets bought. I too will be doing some of this in the New Year, after the Y2K stuff is proved true or false, and the dealers can show me everything works well. I'm not alone as many of those same customers I talked about before, say they are doing the same.

The first quarter could turn into a great spending spree, lifting a lot of stocks into the second quarter as well, as the earnings come out in April and May. Predictions currently are running at 30% increases in company profitability in the media for the next quarter,...that seems to justify current stock prices in the near future, which is all the current crop of stock speculators appear to focus on these days.

Bubble, or science and tech revolution, I think the harvesting of the stock tulips this spring will not occur, and the market will continue up at least until June.

I've been known to be wrong before.(gggggggggggg)
