A few positive comments taken from Merrill Lynch;s recently released Broadband Report:

>>>>>>
. . . Two fo the leading optical component suppliers are JDS Uniphase and SDL, Inc. JDSU is the largest supplier of DWDM multiplexers, and both companies are among the few suppliers that have "Bellcaore-approved 980 nm pump lasers," one of the fastest growing areas of the optical market. Overall, RHK expects the market for optical components to grow from $5.51 billion in 1999 to $21.3 billion in 2003, an average annual rate of 40%.

In the long-haul market, the two dominant companies are Nortel Networks and Lucent. NT and LU both buy equipment from JDSU, SDLI, and others, which they then integrate with their own proprietary products used in building the networks.

The metro market has unique characteristics and different requirements from the existing long-haul market. Since distances are shorter in metro markets, there is less need for pump lasers and specialized fiber, but much more flexibility is required. Networking in the metro market requires the ability to assign dedicated channels, reconfigure the network to meet changing customer needs, and rapidly route incoming packets from interconnecting networks to their required destination. . . .

Investment Conclusion

There are a number of ways to invest in the broadband communications market, and most of the companies mentioned have products in more than one technology. For investors wanting broad exposure to the networking market. . . .

For pure play exposure to the fast growing optical networking market, investors might consider JDS Uniphase and SDL, Inc. . . .
