or install a utility suite like norton systemworks

and pick which sensors you want displayed on the desktop. i always have 11 postage stamp-sized sensors sitting there, one of which is USER free. i monitor resources via that sensor constantly. also keep an eye on windoctor (basic system health), disk health, virus scan, C:drive optimum (defrag) and mem load and a few others.

i've grown to rely upon it (the system doctor) and would miss it if it wasn't present.
