Randall, I hesitate to jump in here on the Euro discussion. I lived in Germany, "on the economy", with my family for 5 wonderful years. I love Europe. I was in the IT business there working for the German sub of a US company, travelling throughout Western Europe. That was 1986-91.

Europe was and is behind the times on public telecom. Despite efforts otherwise, the telecom market is not a competitive one. Cell phones were years late there, compared to US. (I always had culture shock on my visits back to the US. People were actually carrying their "car phones" with them!)

I had a discussion yesterday with a European who was complaining that the US cellular standards were far behind those of Europe. I asked him if CDMA was superior to GSM. "Well, yes, but in Europe we have one standard and it will be many years before CDMA is prevalent enough in the US to make any difference."
