Pat- This is a little old but haven't seen it posted before. This elaborates on the Bloomberg release that contributed to the December 13 frenzy but this was posted after the December 13 close.Fujitsu shifts production off commodity DRAMs TOKYO ? Fujitsu Ltd. began volume production of ferroelectric RAM devices this month and said it expects to increase FRAM output fivefold in the next fiscal year as part of its plan to replace its commodity DRAM production with more logic, nonvolatile memory and specialty DRAM production. Fujitsu is set to produce 1 million 2- and 4-kbyte FRAMs monthly for such applications as smart cards, electronic purses and electronic train passes. The devices are being fabricated at the company's Iwate fab, which is switching from DRAM production to a mix of flash, FRAM and logic. Fujitsu's production road map calls for monthly FRAM production to increase to 5 million devices in fiscal 2000, which ends March 31, 2001, a company spokesman said. The company will continue to sell more specialized flavors of DRAM, including double-data rate DRAMs and its own low-latency fast-cycle RAM devices <my emphasis>, but will phase out production of DRAMs intended for PCs by next spring. Those so-called commodity DRAMs are being produced at foundries and at Fujitsu's own Gresham, Ore., facility, which will also convert to flash and logic production next year. "There are still some customers who want DRAMs, and we will supply them for a while," the spokesman said. Fujitsu is also set to increase its production of flash devices, which are currently in short supply. Fujitsu now produces 2.4 million 8-Mbit-equivalent flash devices per month and plans to boost output to 3.2 million per month by the end of fiscal year 1999, which wraps up March 31. eetimes.com
