Novells Fourth Quarter Tracking Well

Senior Analyst: Garrett Bekker (12/23/99)

Shares of Novell (NASDAQ:NOVL - news) surged 25% this week aftwer management
hosted an upbeat conference call. Fourth-quarter results are 50% “in the bag” and on track
to at least meet expectations. This is a continuation of good news for Novell, which has had
a nearly unbroken string of improving quarterly results.

Analyst Joel Achramowicz of Preferred Capital Markets noted that Novell continues to
execute according to plan and that he is not surprised by the positive news. He added that Novell, which is in a great position
to benefit from the future of network computing, has been relatively neglected so far, especially in comparison with most
high-flying Internet stocks.

The focus of the conference was to discuss Novell's sales strategy, which is increasingly targeting Novell's push into
e-commerce. Novell has historically sold most of its products through third-party distributors. The company now has a direct
sales force in place, which will enable it to be in closer contact with customers and obtain feedback from them.

Management also commented on the recently announced merger between Whittman-Hart (NASDAQ:WHIT - news) and
USWeb/CKS (NASDAQ:USWB - news) . Novell recently invested $100 million in Whittman-Hart, and viewed the merger as
beneficial to Novell. The equity stake is expected to be the first of several in which Novell seeks to partner with leading
e-commerce consulting firms that may wish to deploy Novell's directory products in their e-commerce solutions.

We are not revising our model at this time, and will await the release of the final numbers in early February. We continue to rate
shares of Novell as a BUY.

Updated on 12/23/99 with NOVL trading at $27.88 Recommended 11/16/98 at $20.91

He sees NOVL and SUNW as companies "that enable direct access to network storage, wherever you are, [these companies] will play an increasing role in the paradigm for the new century." He also cites NOVL's strong focus on "storage directories".

Mark, he noted that Nortel briefed him on a study that they had done that indicated that the capacity requirements to meet demand for high bandwidth applications have been significantly underestimated. Their study predicts a capacity crunch, rather than a bandwidth glut. Capacity will increase 80 fold in four years, while demand will rise between 100 and 260 fold in the same period.

Mark, GG must use a different (certainly not "longer") variable return on invested capital (time it takes for a corporation to recoup it's investment in a telecom product entering the marketplace), and different time to market formulation than many analysts (if at all). concerning NOPT/NOVL comment it does appear populist at times. nevertheless, merry xmas to George and good pick on Qcom.
