The Year of the Access and Optical Boom
We expect overall revenue for the telecom equipment industry to grow at least 15% in 2000. As investors focus on the Internet and e-commerce, we believe they will favor networking equipment providers.

Traffic in the core of the network is already exploding due to the Internet. As a result, equipment spending for the network core has been robust in 1999. SONET (synchronous optical network) growth, for example, should top 65% for 1999. We expect the opening of the access bottleneck to supercharge this traffic growth.

Only optical technology, we believe, will allow the network to handle the remarkable increases in traffic predicted for the next five years. Due to strong demand from optical equipment providers, we expect the major providers of optical components to face strong demand and a benign pricing environment over the next 12 months.

It?s easy to claim that valuations in the telecom equipment sector are rich. While the telecom equipment industry overall is growing at 15% ? 20%, particular sub-segments (such as optical networking and components) are expanding significantly faster. Considering the potential for the leading providers, the technological barriers to entry, and the increasing profitability of these companies, the multiples appear more reasonable

Even if LU is suffering, the benefactor of their suffering is certainly not Cisco. The benefactor will likely be NT.

Too bad Cisco doesn't have the product/implementation and the credibility in the Carrier market to take advantage of LU's problems right now!

There was a guest on CNBC a few minutes ago that said that Cisco was going to basically eat LU and NT's lunch!

It was on their "Stocks for 2000 and Beyond" segment.

I've got my table set, Lets see, which one should we eat for lunch! <gg>
