In some milenium, as I have said before to you ;-), there
will be no more circuit switches a la the PSTN. In the
meantime, considering stodgy ILECs and the existing
functional 5ESS/DMS250 SS7 signaled infrastructure, we have
to have ways to migrate and they are as many ways to do that
as there are acronyms. VoIP is easy. It is ip packetized
digitized voice wihich flows over the ip infrastructure
of ip routers/switches. Hows that for dodging the query ?
