>>There are posters who proclaim the end of magnetic storage is near. Hogwash! The cost of magnetic storage is so much lower than ANY alternative that it will be around for many years.<< Gottfried - I agree on this point completely. I would love to see storage go completely solid state, but the economics are against it. Proponents of flash memory point out, correctly, that the price of flash has been dropping quickly, and will continue to do so. What they don't consider is that same thing has been happening with magnetic storage. There may come a point when the price curves for flash and magnetic storage start converging, but it sure isn't happening yet. On the other hand, while hard disk storage prices have come down dramatically over time, Iomega hasn't dropped media prices in the same way. Furthermore, they can't afford to do so. I'm sure they could comfortably drop prices somewhat. Maybe they could even cut the media prices in half and still make a good profit, possibly even coming out ahead due to increases in volume and reduced costs. Clearly, though, they wouldn't make much of a profit selling Zip and Clik! disks for a dollar. The price is only part of the story, though. The question is, will Iomega be able to continue to deliver a total storage package that the customer wants? I don't think it really matters, for example, that Clik! disks cost more per megabyte than Zip disks. I can still imagine buying a digital camera that uses Clik!, just because the disks are so small and convenient to carry around. I'd still be saving a bundle compared to flash, without limiting my ability to take as many pictures as I want while being away from my computer. My wife has expressed interest in getting a digital camera. We've talked about it, and we agree that it makes sense to wait until we can get a camera with at least 2 megapixel resolution, good optics including a zoom, AND Clik! built in. But that camera will have to be on the market this year, or we'll just adjust our thinking and buy something like a Nikon 950. - Allen
