You really can obtain a lot of leverage if you are willing to go out of the money. Of course, the risk generally is commensurate with the reward. I own the Jan 2001 250 calls. I bought them when the stock was at 200. I feel like I am better off than I would have been had I bought the 150 calls. If the stock was at 200 now, then I would be worse off, but my plan was to get some nice leverage on a stock I felt was headed north.
