How is this any more slimy than floating rumors of a false, but "positive" nature, that drive stocks up? Like the microsoft "they're going to announce a settlement today" rumor that drove it up 8 points in a day? Is it somehow OK to make up rumors as long as they make the stock go up?

Once again, you are implying that there is something UnAmerican about shorting a stock. Shorting is a natural part of the market dynamic. It is a basic part of checks and balances. You might as well attack people who have the gall to sell a stock they own! I mean, that's just not right! They're making the shares I own go down! :( (oh, but wait, if someone didnt sell, then nobody could ever buy in the first place...)

Uh huh. And longs never start rumors to hype up stocks so they can get out.
