Flash cards to take center stage in storage market, IDC says Dec 22, 1999 --- In the next five years, flash cards will assume a leading role in the worldwide storage semiconductor market, according to a recent forecast released by International Data Corp. Though flash card revenues will amount to $474 million or less than 8 percent of the market's $6 billion total this year, IDC expects the storage devices to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 43 percent through 2003. By then, flash cards should account for almost a quarter of the market's total revenue. In contrast, the largest worldwide storage semiconductor market segment, hard disk drives, will provide dwindling opportunities. IDC expects this segment to decrease in size from $3.3 billion in 1999 to $3 billion by 2003. "Semiconductor suppliers to the hard disk drive industry should leverage their technology to take advantage of the other drive markets that promise some growth potential," said Xavier Pucel, manager of IDC's Semiconductors research. IDC also reports in its forecast that chip integration should push the flash card market as more functionality, both digital and analog are stuffed onto a single chip. These developments will require extensive expertise in mixed-signal technologies, the firm said. "With the integration as well as flash card market growth, the best opportunities for vendors in this market will be in digital/mixed-signal integrated circuits and flash memory,? Pucel said. IDC details its findings in its 1999 Storage Semiconductor Year in Review: The Promise of Mixed Signal Technology report. Splitting the market into four segments - hard disk drives, optical disk drives, removable magnetic disk drives, and flash memory cards, the report reviews the market's 1999 performance and forecasts growth through 2003 for each segment.
