Sony Corp and Qualcomm have decided to sell their joint cellular phone factory to Kyocera Corp. (J.KCR, news, msgs or 6971), the Nihon Keizai Shimbun learned Friday for its Saturday morning edition.

The U.S. communications equipment manufacturer has already agreed to sell its cell-phone manufacturing operations to Kyocera in February 2000.

The sale will take Sony out of the North American cell-phone manufacturing business, but it will continue R&D operations.

The joint factory is owned by California-based Qualcomm Personal Electronics. Qualcomm holds a 51% stake and Sony 49%.

Since Sony ended cell phone sales under its own brand in North America in September, the factory has been producing handsets at the joint factory for supply to other makers.
