However, I am also guessing that they can take a wait-and-see attitude instead of seriously thinking about it because of Y2K lockdown. Also note that any news or rumor of any delay whatsoever means that even people who want to upgrade will delay it until after the end of the current fiscal quarter.

I seriously doubt it. MSFT announced that they finished the whole products. Also MSFT is already shipping them to OEMs to sell boxes in Jan.

Note that I cannot keep five or six Netscape windows open under Windows 95 or Windows 98 under any circumstances, with any amount of memory. It just drops dead. Sometimes it's nice enough to tell me, sometimes not. And despite what Microsoft wants me to believe, my experience is that any "exception error" in any application crashes the whole system.

With Windows98SE and 128MB I've never reached a limit for how many browser windows I can keep open(IE 5.0 or Netscape 4.7). I've got Linux installed on the same system, but there is no driver support for the ethernet cards I have - means no internet access with Linux for me.

I would upgrade my system if I were having the problems you describe. It sounds like you are very limited in what you can do with it.

john, microsquash is gouging on win 2000. $319 retail (i can get a whole box with win 98 for that!) and $219 to upgrade. it will bust, imho. especially if win 98 is still an option.

And despite what Microsoft wants me to believe, my experience is that any "exception error" in any application crashes the whole system.

I have 3 years intensive daily experience with Windows NT 4.0, and many, many application crashes. Only once did an application crash also crash the system (and it did this repeatedly and consistently) and that was with a beta release of the latest RealPlayer. It took a while to discover what was causing the problem because RealPlayer was running in the "background" without making its presence known as an application.

By the way, I'm long MU again, as of Friday.
