more than 60 percent of parents who will be giving kids and teen-agers a wireless phone this festive season

The article is saying that 60% of those who will give a phone think a certain way. It is NOT saying that 60% of parents in general will give a phone.

As far as I can see, it says nothing about the total number of people buying mobiles for their children.

M: I won't tease you about your misreading of the paragraph in question. You likely just had too much egg nog.

With regard to the profitability of the handset unit, you are correct that Q did not make a profit. However, it has been discussed amongst the analysts, ad nauseum, that a company which bought the handset unit would make it profitable by integrating it into their own manufacturing processes.

Last year Texas Instruments sold their DRAM business to Micron Technology. Micron turned it into a money maker by integrating it with their own. Micron's stock has skyrocketed. Have you followed TXN in the last year?

I guarantee you Nokia wanted the handset unit. I agree that they were not willing to pay what KYO was willing to pay (in terms of money and promises). In any event, you won't see me bashing Nokia, as I own the stock and I have one of their phones.

Mephisto,

Your quote: Sixty Percent of British families plan to give their kids mobile phones for Christmas.

From the article: ...more than 60 percent of parents who will be giving kids and teen-agers a wireless phone this festive season...

Not quite the same meaning. In fact, very different, no? I just wanted to be sure I wasn't misreading stuff from the article. No offence intended.

Cheers!
