Skipping the holiday is not always the worst thing that can happen. We have a new total honesty policy at our house, and now that it has been fully implemented, I must say that everyone did not really like all their presents. So everyone will be getting a couple of different things after the stores open again, but everyone's feelings were a bit hurt, as well.

At dinner today I was having a lovely time (Irish restaurant in North Beach, no cooking). A woman walked in, without a reservation, and asked for a table for one. Of course there is always room for just one more, and she was seated. Thinking of going into a restaurant alone and trying to have a festive Christmas dinner made me feel really sad. She had an Irish accent; she was far from her family for the holidays. I would have happily given her mine, but I would have wanted them back eventually, since we all do love each other very much.
