I cannot answer deep questions about Terrence's psyche and motivations, George. I think he has developed a persona that he thinks works for him on the threads, but it is definitely an exaggeration of the real person you encounter in PMs and emails. I think he may be secure enough to not need to be liked, which to me is a distinct advantage. I am sure like almost everyone at SI you have had the experience of discovering a much more honest and less opinionated and even flawed personality behind the posts than in them, yes?

Are you saying that your estranged son sent you steaks, and you sent him an email which rebuffed him in a way? Do you think it is possible that he sent them to you because he didn't know what to say? I think it was definitely a reconciliatory gesture, and I hope you take it at that and continue to try with him.

Hello, George! Mirabile dictu, I find myself in agreement with Christine's response to you on the subject of Terry. I also have learned something of the person behind the persona. Most of the time when he is carrying on, he is playing.

Although I find him too much of an ideologue in his political commentary, his person is generous and full of humor. When I approach his wilder antics with this understanding, I can almost hear his laughter as he posts something utterly outrageous. I hear my own laughter in response.
