Christine, I have friends who are teachers. They teach because they love it, it nurtures them and they get a charge out of teaching. It's a myth that people work where they work for money alone. Sure, you need to live comfortably and have your basic needs met. But most people work where they work because they...
1. Like the environment
2. Have their achievement needs met.
3. Are empowered to change what they believe needs changing.
4. Can see that they are making a difference. They believe in the vision.

Pay is about 5th on the list of why most people work where they work.

The other issues you point to regarding crumbling schools and such are probably nothing more than mismanagement. Why don't you attend one of your local school board meetings and ask to review the budget. I did last year in my district and after a lot of delay finally received a copy of one. The rumors from teachers were true, and I saw the 5K desk purchased by the superintendent.

I have little doubt you would find the same sort of thing in your district if you bothered to do the research.

People retire all the time at around 50. Quite a few would love to go into teaching to give something back to society. Unfortunately, in far too many cases, the environment is such that they don't bother. The school system needs real leaders and managers willing to create environments in schools where people want to be employeed there. The monopolistic nature of government schools are preventing this from happening today.
