" The PC Industry is preparing for th amss-market utilization of SmartCards in PC applications by the latter half of 1999. An international group of leading PC and smartcard companies including Microsoft, Schlumberger Electronic Transactions, Hewlett Packard, Siemens Nixdorf Information AG and Bull CP8 ("the PC/SC" group),have announced they are working together to develop open stadards that facilitate the integration of SmartCards with PCs. The PC/SC group will achieve this by developing open specifications that ensure inter-operability among Smartcards (SC), SC readers, applications, O/S, and computers made by various manufacturers. As a result of our innovative work and in-house expertise, Microsoft has selected BIT to participate in this process by acting as a Beta test site for the development of PC/SC products. BIT is therefore playing a role in the development of this technology, and is also using this opportunity to ensure compliance of its SC products to the PC/SC standards. This alternate payment system will help alleviate the fear of credit card fraud in the consumer's mind while internet shopping. An applications such as the "Home ATM" provides the convience of performing transfers between accounts and cash cards from a home or office, using a SC equiped PC. As a result, we believe that there is an excellent opportunity for a leading SC equipment manufacturer to provide a low cost solution for the mass consumer market that is critical to the acceptance and success of the 'cash card'. continued next page...
