re: ABX as a symptom What was the market cap of ABX say 7 & 10 years ago? anyone know? also check this out: note the name (the most dirt in the food game) ADM - from where people went from management to prison: Friday December 24 12:41 AM ET Mulroney, who used to scrap with news outlets, named head of Sun Media MONTREAL (CP) - Brian Mulroney, who spent much of his nine years as Conservative prime minister scrapping with the news media, is the new chairman of Sun Media Corp. The appointment was announced Thursday by Jean Neveu, chairman of Quebecor Corp., which acquired the Sun Media newspaper chain last January. Mulroney's "experience and vision" will provide "high-level guidance and leadership for the future of Sun Media," Neveu said in a statement. The 60-year-old Mulroney, who served as prime minister from 1984 until 1993, is already a board member of several top companies including Quebecor and subsidiary Quebecor Printing Inc (NYSE:PRW - news). The former prime minister is "quite happy" with his nomination as chairman of Sun Media, said Mulroney's spokesman Luc Lavoie. Lavoie said the chairmanship is "not a full-time job" and Mulroney will continue in his other positions as chairman of ForbesGlobal in New York and as a director of Barrick Gold Corp (NYSE:ABX - news)., TrizecHahn Corp. and the U.S. agri-food giant Archer Daniels Midland Co. Mulroney is also a senior partner in the Ogilvy Renault law firm and is a member of advisory councils to Chase Manhattan Bank and Independent Newspapers PLC of Dublin, Ireland. Andre Dalcourt, president of the union representing editorial staff, photographers and office workers at Le Journal de Montreal, called the nomination of Mulroney "a very good decision," noting that Mulroney has established his credibility both in business and in politics. "He is the man we need," Dalcourt said, noting that Sun Media will be making an initial public share offering in the new year. "He is welcome." Editorial staffers at Le Journal de Montreal staged a protest this year to express their concern about the integration of the French-language Montreal daily into Toronto-based Sun Media after Quebecor bought the company. Dalcourt said Thursday that Mulroney's knowledge of the professional ethics of journalism should be an asset to Sun Media. "He knows the culture of Quebecor," the union leader said. Sun Media, Canada's second-largest newspaper chain, publishes eight big-city dailies, eight local dailies and 171 weeklies and other publications in Canada and the United States. Mulroney replaces Charles Clavell as Sun Media chairman. Clavell will focus on his position as president and CEO of Quebecor Printing and will concentrate on the integration of World Color Press into Quebec Printing. With the purchase of World Color, Quebecor Printing became the world's largest commercial printer. (Montreal Gazette) ¸ The Canadian Press, 1999ca.dailynews.yahoo.com
