Dear Patricia,

I hope you do not object to the familiarity; I'll go even further and return those hugs to you (oo - is that the way you do it?)

I'm still too much in the Christmas mode to want to discuss that issue at any great length right now.

But I will a little. A lot of you are ultra sensitive to any implied criticism of Tim. Actually, I like Tim, at least as I know him from the anonymity of a message board. I have said to others privately that if you must have a leader from Cyberland, Tim is one of the best choices you could make.

As to cults -- they are no more the "fault" of a leader than they are of the followers. Indeed, it is the neediness of the followers that is the essential ingredient to their formation. It is my personal feeling that it is inappropriate to use a public discussion forum such as SI to form a select group that then uses SI to communicate in secret code. I also feel that the solicitation of personal phone numbers violates the very spirit of SI -- which is to foster open, uninhibited exchange of views by meticulously guarding the anonymity of posters. So, in these respects particularly, I think that Tim has used bad judgement here.

That's enough said for now. Exchanges like these two between us, where people disagree with each other in good cheer, and in the open ... well, I think that's what SI is all about.

I hope that you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas, as I do believe you are a most kind and generous person. I wish you all success and happiness in the New Year.

J.C.
