But I don't remember why the Bishop slapped us...do you?
Stacy was horrified.
He SLAPPED you????
Well, not hard, or anything, it was symbolic.
Of what?

Sorry to take so long getting back to you...I was off brewing some more Thera-Flu. Ugh! But it works.

As I recall the slap, which was really more of a tap, had to do with Confirmation's function as a strengthening and preparation for entering a greater world with which one's faith might find itself at war, or at least under assault. It was a part of the conveying that it was not sufficient to believe; one had to be willing to defend the faith and could be hurt or killed in so doing.

[Edit: Coby may have something to add to this question.]

I attend occasionally--not just on the big holydays but off and on.

IMO, the wind of change swept away as much good as pointless. A lot of the power of ritual and symbolism to help us focus and to perceive depth was shoved aside. A pity for all of us.

It wasn't simply the weeping statues and the miracles either. We knew what the colors of the vestments meant and what each article of clothing meant. The Ordo had meaning. We knew what Laetare Sunday was.

I don't know if it has changed since I was last there, but if you find yourself in Boston on a Sunday, check out The Church of the Advent, a very, very "high church" Episcopal congregation. Unless it has changed dramatically, you will feel at home, I suspect.
