Todd -

Thank you for the excellent input on future drive density. Scary isn't it.

Who will be around to make the 80gb platters, heads and suspensions? It won't be new entries to the market because the profit outlook is to bleak. The existing companies will never make it in the business long enough unless they change their business plan for today's conditions.

Although the future is blurry from here, IMO the component makers must raise their prices or have a large increase in demand. The demand for components looks like it is declining because of the fewer parts per drive. This means they can't sell an 80gb platter for $8.45 and survive. How about $84.50? Or maybe two 40gb platters for $50.00 each. or maybe four 20gb platters for $28.00 each. This is what it will take for component makers to survive unless they have some great cost cutting schemes.

I don't know how component makers can get price increases but it would probably take shortages to get things rolling. Any thoughts?

Regards,
Mark
