But any such benefit to the bottom line is simply temporary, Bill. If Company x employs the technology will companies y and z ignore it?

How's this fundamentally different from the adoption of accounting software? Sure initially there were companies that save money and had a competitive advantage, but where's that advantage now.

Don't get me wrong -- greater efficiency is greater efficiency but it doesn't imply a fundamental shift in earnings for those employing the technology ... of course, the government has a funky way of calculating the worth of the efficiencies gained ... so who knows if 1/2 of this stuff is cost-effective once all the true costs are tallied?

I use MS Office products at work and even build some little apps for users. I spend more than 60% of that time trying to get such and such component of one of the office apps to work as I do designing an algorithm to solve a problem. I think there are probably some net experiences which are the same ... costs to bring the app up are underestimated and the benefits over-estimated.
