I haven't seen much more than the explanation given in the article referenced in post #56:

Nanovation's roots go back to 1996, when a group of knowledgeable
Canadian investors heard about an interesting scientific paper about
micro-circuit technology written by Dr. Seng-Tiong Ho, a professor at
Northwestern University.

I assume it was that "group of knowledgeable Canadian investors" who started Stamford International. Why they chose to invest through another corporate intermediary instead of investing directly isn't clear. I don't know when Requena and Robert "Bobbie" Hillis Miller became involved either.
