Sure is too bad about Curtis Mayfield. He had so many different careers within a career: leader of the Impressions, a group that fused r&b and gospel like no group before them; a great producer (his was the sound of Chicago soul in the 1960s -- he produced all of Major Lance's hits, such as "Monkey Time" and a personal fave, Jan Bradley's "Mama Didn't Lie"); soundtrack specialist (most prominently, "Superfly"); and a great solo artist who was able to move musically with the times, and able to embrace black pride without ever hitting a racist note; and then after his freak accident, he not only lived the rest of his life with grace, but produced a superb album, "New World Order," that introduced him to a new generation of fans who had previously only heard him sampled on hiphop records. His guitar-player and tenor voice were unmistakable.

He was one my musical heroes, so forgive me for this totally off-topic obituary.
