Seven Predictions for 2000 (from Briefing)

4. Citigroup (C) Acquires E*Trade (EGRP): One for the reach category, but we expect 2000 to be a year of mega-mergers in the financial industry due to the recent repeal of Glass-Steagall. Citigroup's management has shown a willingness to make deals, as well as a flair for the dramatic. Acquistion of EGRP would bolster C's Web-presence, not to mention its retail client and underwriting businesses. C would also benefit from EGRP's underappreciated portfolio of Net stocks.
