The stock looks strong when you compare it to Lucent and Cisco.

I remember what John Chambers in the CISCO said during their earnings conference call in response to which company he is keeping an eye on--lucent or nortel. It was pretty clear (although he said it was both) he was keeping an eye on Nortel. Any analyst/investor listening to that CC came out thinking that NT is a buy. I decided to buy it aggressively from that day forward.
Now my number 2 holding.

I can't image NT announcing a stock split before earnings release (are earnings out on the 15th?).
When it is this close the end of the quarter, they would wait til at least the earnings release before such an announcement.

Some companies want a gradual stock price increase. However, Nortel is moving more and more into the high growth fibre optics industry. THey cannot afford to let other high PE stocks like JDS Uniphase (or CSCO)scoop up smaller companies using their very high stock prices to their advantage. In my opinion, Nortel will use whatever means to increase their stock price in the near term and a stock split will surely help.

good luck to all.
