Taiwan Semi to merge with TSMC-Acer-paper
TAIPEI, Dec 28 (Reuters) - World microchip foundry leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co has decided to merge with TSMC-Acer Semiconductor, Taipei's Commercial Times newspaper said on Tuesday.

To obtain new capacity, Taiwan Semicon in June bought a 30 percent stake in Acer's memory-chip unit, Acer Semiconductor Manufacturing, winning management control in the T$5.5 billion deal. The firm was later renamed TSMC-Acer Semicon.

Taiwan Semicon public relations manager Tzeng Jinn-haw declined to comment on the report. ''I cannot comment now. I'm still checking,'' he said by telephone.

The Commercial Times said executives in Taiwan Semicon and Acer would soon hold meetings to settle the merger.

Taiwan Semicon plans to boost overall production capacity by about 50 percent in 2000 as more integrated design manufacturers, or IDMs, buy made-to-order chips.

Taiwan Semicon has a listing of American Depositary Receipts (NYSE:TSM - news) on Wall Street.

On Monday, Taiwan Semicon shares rose the daily seven percent limit to a fresh 1999 closing high at T$171.
