Speaking of matters of the gut: Tuesday December 28, 4:18 pm Eastern Time Lewinsky to be spokeswoman for Jenny Craig diet By Sue Zeidler LOS ANGELES, Dec 28 (Reuters) - In her latest career twist, Monica Lewinsky is following a duchess's low-cal path to earning big bucks by shrinking her waistline while capitalizing on her notoriety. The former White House intern, whose affair with President Bill Clinton led to his impeachment trial, has signed a lucrative deal to be a spokeswoman for the Jenny Craig diet, which has helped her shed 31 pounds (14 kg) to date, officials of the company said on Tuesday. Lewinsky is following a trail blazed by Sarah Ferguson, the duchess of York, who fattened her purse by an estimated $1 million a year when she struck a similar deal a few years ago with Jenny Craig rival Weight Watchers. ''We were aware of Monica's past trouble with her weight and knew she'd been unsuccessful and was looking for a new program. She's an example of our success stories and is extremely recognizable,'' said Brian Luscomb, spokesman for La Jolla, California-based Jenny Craig Inc (NYSE:JC - news). Starting on Sunday, Lewinsky will appear in two commercials, featuring her bloated ''before'' image, as well as ''after'' shots of a svelter, happier Lewinsky. The ads will mark the 26-year-old's first appearance on national television since an interview with Barbara Walters and a guest shot on Saturday Night Live. The campaign will run at least through March, according to Luscomb. He declined to comment on reports that Lewinsky would be paid $1 million if she lost 60 pounds. The company also refuses to say how much Lewinsky weighs or is trying to lose, citing client confidentiality policies. Jenny Craig has several other famous clients participating in the program, some of whom have been featured in commercials, including Jerry Mathers of ''Leave It to Beaver.'' The diet company is apparently betting that Lewinksy's notoriety will give its weight-loss program a boost, despite that fact that many Americans view her affair with the president in a negative light. ''This is all about where Monica wants to take her life. This is about her achieving her goals and looking ahead,'' said Luscomb. He said the deal with Lewinsky was signed in the summer when she joined the program and that her weight loss has been very consistent. I guess Monica sold her CMRC too soon and needs money <G>
