TSMC Begins Fab Construction for 12-Inch Wafers
December 27, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd., the largest silicon foundry in Taiwan, said it started construction of its first 12-inch fab (Fab 12) in the Hsinchu Science-Based Industrial Park.

The construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2000 with the installation of a clean room, and manufacturing equipment will move in from 2001. Production will commence from early 2002.

Fab 12 will make a pilot run using a 0.15 micron to 0.13 micron design rule, and will then go to 0.1 micron process technology.

It will reserve part of its capacity for research and development of a product line for the 0.1 micron technology. The total capacity of Fab 12 will be 25,000 units of 12-inch wafers a month.
