I think G* had half the cost (of "construction") of I*, BUT ALSO many more total minutes capacity than I*.

That is why some numbers on G* can be more than twice as good as with I*.

Jon.

Rocketman:

GSTRF is not competing against land based cellular. This is apple and oranges, The only similarity is that they both uses CDMA. GSTRF market is where land based cellular is not possible. For example: oil rigs, marines, remote areas where there are no cell sites.

As for the cost of $ 4/minutes as compared what the article states as $ 0.05/minute, I do not have first hand knowledege. I just presented that report.

As I recall, Dr. Irwin Jacobs did mentionen a subsriber base of 400K to be profitable. He is quite bullish of GSTRF. I for one don't bet against that man.

We hope that we are right, which means a further boost to CDMA.

Best regards,

Paul

The 10bn minutes per year breakeven is about 8c per minute. Not 5c. The capacity is not a set figure, but depends on gateway placement, global spread of use etc.

Globalstar was cheaper to build than Iridium [including gateways and as a turnkey system] but excluding handsets. Globalstar is producing 10bn minutes a year, while Iridium can only produce 1.2bn minutes. The call quality is much better with Globalstar though coverage is much reduced [at present until gateways are fully built out over the next 5 years].
