Veterans were given land warrants for service back then. Your ggg granddaddy probably bought a warrant from a fellow platoon member or dependent of such and exercised it. Warrants were transferable and most were sold to third parties.>>

GG Grand daddy didn't go to war. GG grand daddy had 2,200 acres under cultivation when 40 was a farm. His daddy got there before it was part of the US and got some good land. GG grand daddy did supply the horses, weapons etc for a platoon to fight the Mexican War. Same platoon that stole Santa Anna's peg leg and his dinner.
