NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Shares of Globalstar jumped 27 percent Monday afternoon on heavy volume after a tech pundit wrote a report discussing Globalstar's technology.

A Wall Street analyst said George Gilder's Technology Report wrote a piece which included a brief mention of Globalstar (GSTRF: news, msgs) in his monthly report. Gilder's office didn't immediately return a call or an e-mail.

Last week Gilder, who is often seen in the pages of Forbes and other business publications, mentioned Novell (NOVL: news, msgs), helping contribute to a 27 percent gain in that stock. See full report.

Trading in Globalstar was more than four times heavier than average Monday. The stock rose as much as 10 3/16 to 38 3/8 in recent trading. That's a 52-week high.

Another factor which may be affecting shares is the large number of shares which have been sold short in anticipation the stock will fall.

There are 16.1 million shares of Globalstar which have been sold short. When a stock rises against investors' expectations it can "squeeze" the price even higher as those who have sold rush to buy shares to cover their short positions.

Globalstar offers wireless calls over its constellation of low-orbiting satellites.

A similar service was offered by Iridium. However, that company, which had the backing of several telecommunications powerhouses, has gone belly up.

Re : George Gilder. If you spend enough time reading SI, you will almost inevitably learn a lot of what is in the GTR without having to pay for it.

Only problem is -- it may take you a while to pick up the details.

Qualcomm and JDS Uniphase and Global Crossing and Terayon and Metromedia Fiber Network are a few (and representative, I think) of his typical choices.

There is a GG thread on SI, also.

Jon.
