here's a true life heartwarming xmas story, from local NJ papers: Brick boy, 8, pulls sister, 4, from chilly waters Published in the Asbury Park Press 12/27/99 By WILFORD S. SHAMLIN TOMS RIVER BUREAU BRICK -- An imaginary Jedi-training exercise nearly ended in disaster for three young children playing near the Barnegat Bay on Christmas Eve. Victoria Conti, 4, had just broken from a huddle with her older brother, Blake, 8, and his friend, Tommy Tompkins, when she lost her balance, then staggered backward before falling into the frigid water, the Conti's parents said yesterday. "We consider Blake our little hero," said Bob Conti, the boy's father. "His quick-thinking saved her life," he said. "I hate to say it, but it probably did. We were that close to losing one or both of our children." The children were acting out the make-believe game with toy weapons inspired by the Star Wars movies, about a boy who trains to become a Jedi knight and leads a galactic war against the Emperor and his evil cohorts. The trio were playing unsupervised at about 10 a.m. in an empty lot across the street from the Conti's home on Cartagena Drive. After Victoria fell, Cindy Conti said Blake told her he tried to grab hold of Victoria from the dock, but the steady current had pulled her out of reach. He told Tommy to run for help, then dove in after her. "I was not going to let water take my sister away," Blake said. He told Victoria to climb onto his back and he then worked his way back to the bulkhead. There was no ladder or stairs leading to the higher ground -- about 4 feet above them -- so he held onto a crab line until their mother arrived and pulled them out of the water. It was cold enough outside that night for a thin layer of ice to form over some parts of the bay. Both children were doing fine yesterday. Their mother is still nursing her wounds from her role in the rescue -- open cuts on the soles of her feet from running barefoot across the ground and light bruises on her legs and arms. Since the family moved into their home in 1995, the Contis say they have constantly warned their children not to play near the water, a big attraction during the hot summer months. And after Thursday's close-call, they don't think their children need to be warned again.
