I have never had to time this, but for tax loss purposes, the date of sale doesn't count, but its the date of settlement that matters for taxes? Therefore you would have to sell today for settlement 12/31/1999, to be in the 1999 tax year.

We got a little price rise on disk stocks last week. It seemed more than just the end of tax selling. I think the disk vendors are finishing the quarter with lean inventories and firm prices. If PC sales stay strong for another month, I think we'll see a big pop in disk stocks.
