UMC's Five-in-One Operations to Hit US$28.45 Billion in Sales
December 28, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- United Microelectronics Corp.'s board of directors met on Dec. 22 to discuss operational targets and financial planning in 2000.

Insiders revealed the meeting has drawn a preliminary decision to set sales of five-in-one operations (five plants running together) at NT$90 billion and after-tax earnings at NT$30 billion, or NT$3.32 a share based on a consolidated share capital of NT$90.3 billion. (NT$31.63 = US$1)

The group will officially undertake five-in-one operations Jan. 3, and expected sales could reach NT$120 billion to NT$120 billion if the expansion program proceeds smoothly, and that will generate a after-tax profit of NT$35.0 billion, or NT$3.87 a share. However, accurate numbers will not be audited until January.

UMC group's wafer output totaled 1.78 million pieces in 1999. The average sales price settled at US$1,300 for the 0.3-micron process that contributes 40 percent to 50 percent of annual sales; US$1,600 to US$1,800 for the 0.25-micron process that contributed 20 percent to 30 percent of annual sales; and US$2,600 for the 0.18-micron process that contributed 10 percent of sales.

Average monthly sales in wafers settled at NT$6.5 billion to NT$6.9 billion in the fourth quarter, and NT$60 billion for the full year, with profit margin near 40 percent.

Full-year sales are expected to grow 40 percent after the combination, UMC watchers said.

UMC's wafer output totaled 1.78 million pieces this year, and could increase 41 percent next year. Its wafer output could hit three million pieces in 2001, and another four million pieces in 2002. October output amounted to 148,000 pieces, and November to over 150,000 pieces.

In terms of productivity of the five combined plants, UMC's plant three (8A) reported 32,000 pieces a month that increased to 35,000 in December, and will likely increase to 38,000 in June in 2000.

United Semiconductor Corp.'s plant one (8B) reported full capacity of 36,000 pieces, while United Silicon Inc.'s (8C) could reach 22,000 pieces at end of the year, and likely increase to 30,000.

Holtek Microelectronics Inc.'s plant two (8E) reported monthly capacity of 22,000 that will increase to 30,000 next year, with the ultimate target set at 40,000.

The five-in-one plant has started installing equipment, with trial production to take place in January, and official production in April. Monthly wafer output could reach 20,000 by the end of 2000.
